We own a 2001 Subaru Outback that we purchased 3 years ago. We did so on recommendation from my mother who has owned two Subaru's previously. It has been a very dependable vehicle for me and my family. It has leather seats which are auto adjustable, which is a very welcome feature for myself as I have back pain from time to time. We absolutely love how it handles in snow and bad weather. Living in an area where we typically get snow and ice during the winter months, it has made getting around so much less stressful, which just wasn't the case with our cars previously. Regarding everything else about the vehicle, there are some things that we haven't been completely pleased with. This was purchased used, and is by no means a newer vehicle, so there have been some exhaust issues, and als... (more)
Story
When waking up to a big overnight snowstorm, we had it parked in our shed. We live in the country, and the distance from just our shed to the country road is quite a ways. We had around a foot of snow, and right in front of the shed it had drifted very high, around 3 to 4 feet. I'd already experienced and seen how it could perform in snow, so just sat right down, started her up, and plowed rig... (more)
Pros
The pros for our 2001 Subaru Outback would start with it's handling in bad weather, particularly snow, that is our favorite feature. Also, we love the trunk space and the ease of loading and unloading that it provides. The seating space inside the vehicle is also nice and roomy. It drives very smoothly as well.
Cons
The fuel economy is not the best on it, but somewhat to be expected with a 6 cylinder. We have had issues with the exhaust system on ours, so that may be something to pay attention to. It doesn't seem to have great get up and go also, but that could also be attributed to it being a little older vehicle.

It is a joke I suppose that Subaru owners love their cars, but this is my third Subaru and I do love my car. I had a 1995 Legacy wagon for 20 years before getting this one, a used 2008. I'd prefer buying a new car, but Subaru no longer makes normal station wagons. At least this old Outback is similar to the Legacy wagon. In some ways it is better - I've already benefited from the tire low air pressure warning light. The seats are more comfortable than those in the old Legacy - there is some lumbar support, for one thing, and better thigh support on each side.
Story
When I first saw this car, I thought the colors were kind of ugly, but a woman who had been with me in the service area when I decided against fixing my 20-year-old car drove past and said it was gorgeous, like mink and champagne. I laughed and told her I would have to learn to see it through her eyes.
Pros
I like some of the features the old car did not have, such as outdoor temperature, mpg and at least theoretically how many more miles are left in the gas tank, and two trip odometers. I would not have known I had gotten a nail in my tire until it was totally flat without that cool tire pressure warning light. It goes without saying that the most important Pro for any Subaru is All Wheel Drive.
Cons
I miss a sunroof! I don't care about letting in sun, but letting out hot air. Since I can't pop the top, I must now put the windows down a bit when I park outdoors in hot weather, but that is neither as safe nor as effective. The Outback is longer than the Legacy, but the cargo area is smaller. What makes anyone think a bigger car with less storage is a good thing? The cargo cover is insane, needing a little piece that attaches under the window since the slant of the window prevents the cover from coming far enough back to cover the cargo. When there is too much stuff back there to use the... (more)

I've owned the car for a year, and it has gotten me to and from work as well as traveling a few states away. I like long car trips, and it has not let me down. I live in an area of fields and mostly backroads, and for this, the car has done it's part. What I'm not a fan of is what I assume to be the build quality and what it takes to repair/replace parts. Changing the headlights is an ordeal. In order to change the headlight, we needed to remove a wheel, in order to remove a panel, in order to reach an arm in and feel around for the headlight. It's a headlight, why is it so hard to change something so simple? Also, my tires keep losing air. I really want to know why this is. Like, constantly, even after patching. Don't know. If you want something that can be maintained by yourself, thi... (more)
Story
I've only had the car for a year, so no major stories yet. Right now, I love connecting the Bluetooth to my phone and driving in the summer with the sunroof open. Oh, I love the way it handles around dirt roads too. It can be a fun car with the right mindset.
Pros
Gas mileage, all-wheel drive.
Cons
Not an easy car to work on without a shop.
